VPN (Virtual Private Network)

For security and licensing reasons, some services and data can only be accessed from the university network. Therefore, a connection to the campus network from locations outside the university (e.g. from home) is a prerequisite for such services, such as access to online libraries or event documents from some institutions. This is the so-called VPN connection (virtual private network).

Please note that VPN is not required for an internet connection via the university's WLAN.

The data center offers 3 ways for connecting to the university network via VPN:

  • with the VPN client, FortiClient (preferred) ,
  • with the on-board Tools of the operating system, L2TP / Psec (preferred) ,
  • via a webpage, the CAU VPN web portal.
Important note: To use the connection methods mentioned above, you need to log in with the Active Directory account. For users who did not have an Active Directory account but who use the dial-up services of the data center, an Active Directory account was automatically created with the password of the dial-up services.

A. VPN client installed on the device (FortiClient)

You can install the FortiClient VPN client software on your device to connect your device to the university network. The connection with the FortiClient gives you the same access as with the web portal, but requires the use of your own installed programs on your device.

Important note : FortiClient is available in two versions: the VPN Only version, which only enables VPN, and the full version, which contains other software modules in addition to VPN (e.g. virus scanners). The data center does not support the full version of FortiClient and has no licenses for the contained software parts. Please install the VPN Only Client.

Note : You can download the FortiClient that matches your device via the CAU VPN web portal . However, this requires a registration with your RZ ID (or stu ID for students and su ID for employees).

Please follow the instructions for installing Forticlients for

B. Operating system integrated board means, L2TP / IPsec

Please follow the following instructions for setting up under Windows, Linux and MacOS.

C. CAU-VPN web portal

Important note: The web portal offers the same access rights as the other 2 methods, but due to technical limitations it should not be used as the main access method.

You can use the CAU VPN web portal via your web browser to access websites and services in the campus network. The portal does not require any additional programs to be installed, is hardware and software independent and can be accessed from anywhere via the Internet. The CAU VPN web portal offers you various integrated services on a website such as data transfer (file transfer), remote control (remote desktop) and secure shell (SSH). More information about using the CAU VPN web portal can be found here .

If you have any questions regarding use, please contact the RZ Helpdesk .

Note: A VPN connection from the student dorm is not possible. The dorm is already connected to the university network.
