The computing centre maintains a university-wide Windows network for Kiel University: the Active Directory (AD), a technology provided by Microsoft. Users and Windows resources can be integrated and administered in the AD. Although the AD is usually run as a directory service, it contains many other functionalities such as management of PCs, servers and printers.

The AD provides a central authentication service which grants users access to university resources. Clients an servers can efficiently be managed and controlled.

Users have a single account to access the resources in question. IT administrators get an efficient infrastructure for the management of their clients and servers.

Normally this service can be used around the clock.
