Before you begin

Step 0: Check the requirements

Before you start with the installation you should review the following requirements:

  • You are running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
  • You have administrator privileges on the machine.
  • You have a valid STU- or SU-Account.
  • As an employee: You have subscribed to the DialUp-Service. Subscribe now (PDF)
  • As a student: You have activated your stu-Account with your RZ-Pin. Activate here


Setup OpenVPN

Step 1: Download and Install the OpenVPN client

Download the OpenVPN client from our website and install it.

  • 64-bit Client: download
  • 32-bit Client (recommended if you don't know which one to choose): download




Step 2: Download the OpenVPN configuration

Download the OpenVPN configuration file from here and copy it to the OpenVPN config folder which you can find under the following location: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config or C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config.



Step 3: Start OpenVPN asadministrator

Search for the OpenVPN symbol on your desktop. Click with the right mouse button on the OpenVPN symbol and select Run as administrator in the context menu. Accept the User Account Control dialog by clicking Yes.



Step 4: Connect to the VPN

Search for the OpenVPN symbol in the bottom right corner of your taskbar. Click on it with the right mouse botton and select Connect in the context menu. Enter your STU- or SU-Number as username and your password. Click Ok to connect.



Wrong password


Maybe you entered a wrong password. You can test your password at other services (for example here).


Old password


Your password must have changed at least once since June 2010 for OpenVPN to work. You can change you password here


No/slow connection


There are reports that with some providers the connection gets very slow or completly stalls after activating VPN. Please consider calling the university's helpdesk if you think that you're affected by this.
