JupyterLab in research

As part of the Cloudlab project, the University Computing Centre in cooperation with the Geomar Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel operates a cross-subject and cross-faculty virtual, web-based PC lab based on a JupyterLab platform. This offer focuses exclusively on the use of JupyterLab in teaching.

On the other hand, within Kiel University, there is the need to also use JupyterLab in scientific research for various purposes (e.g. for data evaluation, analysis, small-scale simulations, or as an electronic laboratory book), and on campus there exist already individual solutions that are moderated decentrally.

The Computing Centre currently does not offer any central resources of its own to use JupyterLab in research, however it is possible to use JupyterLab with the foci scientific computing and higher resource requirements in terms of CPU performance and/or main memory usage interactively or via the batch system on the high-performance computing systems.

The Computing Centre strives to facilitate exchanges between JupyterLab user groups in research, potentially also to develop and evaluate future deployment scenarios for JupyterLab and JupyterHub systems.

Both the HPC support team (hpcsupport@rz.uni-kiel.de) and the Cloudlab team (cloudlab@rz.uni-kiel.de) are therefore available gladly as contact and mediator of contacts to user groups on campus.
