Using the new multi-purpose printers under Windows

This information applies to the new campus copiers whose rollout will take place starting in December 2021.
The information on the previous copiers can be found in the information on the previous campus copiers

The Ricoh multifunction printers are managed
by the Facilities Management.
You will also find information, notes and instructions (in german) on how to use the printers and the billing codes there.

The following instructions are intended only for employees who wish to use the copiers on campus as printers. Other devices are available for students, where both integration and payment system differ.

In some areas of CAU, workstations are managed and configured by centralized or decentralized IT staff. If your computer is located in such a managed IT environment, the necessary changes may be made automatically without your intervention.

Establish connection with print server

Your computer must be in the campus network or connected to the campus network via VPN. Start Windows Explorer and enter the following in the address line: \\campusprint.uni-kiel.de

Adresseingabe

If you are logged into the central AD of Kiel University, you will be connected directly. Otherwise, you have to log in with your identifier in the Active Directory. As username you can enter 'uni-kiel' followed by a backslash '\' and your RZ identifier or your UPN of the AD. The password used is the general account password, which is always used in the Active Directory.

Please note if needed: Information about logging in under a different user account or different RZ ID (in german)

Login mit uni-kiel\account

If your computer is not integrated in the Active Directory and you want to use the campus copiers without manual login, you should check 'Remember my credentials'. This will save protected the login information for using the printers at the server 'campusprint.uni-kiel.de' on your computer in the 'Credential Manager' of your user account. When sending a print job to the central print server, the credentials would then be used in the background from the Credential Manager; remember then to make any necessary updates to the stored password in case of password changes.

Important: Please make sure that the time of your computer is correct. Otherwise the authentication process will be unsuccessful. The time server available on the campus network is 'ts2.rz.uni-kiel.de'. (Notes on time synchronization)

Printer queue configuration

After login, you will see the released printer queues.

Druckerqueues auf Printserver

You can connect to a printer by doing a right-click on the printer symbol and then chosing 'connect' in the context menu that's popping up. The printer will be configured on your system and the corresponding printer driver will be automatically downloaded and installed.

It is recommended to install the following queues

  • campusprint_color (PCL-Driver, Color)
  • campusprint_sw (PCL-Driver, Black and White)

If errors occur here that contain the error code 0x000006e4, 0x0000007c, or 0x00000709, see the November 2021 note below.

Technically, this is the same queue, only the default settings of the printer driver are set differently to 'Color' and 'Black/White'. In addition, you can later also force a printout in grayscale when picking up at the device.

Queues with names ending with 'PS'

  • campusprint_color_ps
  • campusprint_sw_ps

are PostScript-Queues.

Important (November 2021): In an attempt to close the security hole known as Printernightmare (in german) Microsoft has tightened the policy for setting up printers via the procedure described above in such a way that many clients receive error messages and, depending on the Windows version and patch status, the printer setup can also fail. Microsoft has announced patches here, please check if the respective computer has applied these patches.

Instructions for installing the update can be found here: Windows Updates: Install Optional Update (in german).

Control and test via user dashboard

After setting up the printer queues, it is possible to check directly on the Computer whether it is possible to print to the system. To do this, simply place any print job in the new queue. Afterwards, it can be checked in the so-called user dashboard whether the print job is available in the system. Details are documented in the

User dashboard documentation (in german)

Note on controlling black/white printing on the copier

Before releasing a Job at a copy system you should check on the display, whether the print will be as you intended. So it might be possible that the print will be using color mode, although you sent the job into a black and white queue. A color print is more expensive than a black and white print, so be sure to check that before releasing a job.

You also have the option to force a grayscale printout on the copier:
