Embedding network shares

The CAU-Cloud allows the users to access other storage services hosted by the computing center. Therefore the access needs to be configured within the web interface of the CAU-Cloud. An example network share could be a personal SAMBA share, a SAMBA project share or the Windows Home network share.

Please be aware that sharing your data is easier in that way, but depending on nature of the data please think about what you are allowed to share. Please consult your project partners or your department head, whether it is okay to share the data. As a rule of thumb: If access to the data via VPN is allowed it should be fine to access the data in the CAU-Cloud as well.

Access to the network share

The network share configuration (so-called external storages) takes place in the settings menu of the web interface of the CAU-Cloud. You can find the web interface at cloud.rz.uni-kiel.de. For additional information to login and usage of the web interface please have a look at the according acricle.

Configuration of external storages

Das Einstellungs-Menü
At the top right corner in the web interface you can find the settings menu, herw we will set up the access to external storages.

Das Menü Externe Speicher
Please choose "External storages" from the settings submenu on the left side.

Auswahlmenü des Speichertyps
Choose a name for your network share, this name will be shown as a folder within your CAU-Cloud later. Please choose the type of storage from the dropdown menu. For now, only "SMB / CIFS" shares are allowed within the CAU-Cloud. This allows access to all storage services provided by the computing center.

Auswahl der Authentifizierungs-Methoden
In the column authentication you will find a drop-down menu with different authentication options. To get all features of the CAU-Cloud working, only two of them are a reasonable choice:

If you do use the same credentials to access your network share as you are using to access the CAU-Cloud, you can choose "Log-in credentials, save in database". Otherwise, please choose "Username and password". In both cases your credentials will be encrypted and saved in the database of the CAU-Cloud!

Konfiguration eines Externen SpeichersPlease enter your network share configuration in the next column. The share path is separated into 4 different fields Host, Share und Remote subfolder and Domain.

SAMBA (personal) for account suabc123:
Share: suabc123

SAMBA (projekt) for projekt SFB1234:
Host: samba.rz.uni-kiel.de
Share: SFB1234
Domain: UNI-KIEL

Windows Fileserver for account suabc123:
Host: uni-kiel.de
Share: files
Unterordner: [institut/]home/suabc123
Domain: UNI-KIEL

On the Windows fileservers some institutes do have different subfolders for their data. Please ask your institutes administrator for the correct configuration parameters in this case.

The screenshot above shows an example configuration for a personal folder on the Windows fileserver for the user suabc123. If you selected "Username and password" before, you will have to enter those here as well.

Erweiterte Konfiguration von Externen Speichern
Optionally you may decide if you want to allow the data on the external storage to be sharable by the CAU-Cloud. You can find this setting hissen in the context menu behind the "...".

Externe Speicher - Konfiguration speichernBy using the checkmark button you can finish the configuratio process. The CAU-Cloud server will try to access the storage and will show the state in form of an icon on the left side. If everything works as expected, you will find a green checkmark here, otherwise please recheck your configuration.

 Externe Speicher in der Weboberfläche
Now the network share will be shown as a folder in your file tree with a special icon indicating that it is on another storage server.

Bestätigung eines Syncs im Desktop-Client
Depending on your sync client configuration a prompt will show up with the next sync to ask you wether the data on the network share shall be synced to your locl workstation as well. Especially for huge network shares it might be a good idea to choose only a subset of folders to be kept in sync locally. In  the shows example the network share with the name "example" was configured. The special icon shows, that it is a network share.
